This manual is a deliverable for the WAVE project. It is a manual produced by youth workers, for youth workers and young people who want to be more involved in taking ecological and climate action in their community. The manual contains 30 non-formal education methodologies and/or tools for climate activism, divided in six categories, to be used mostly with youth aged 15-34. In this manual you will also find tips, clues and best practices on how to adapt the methods for youth with fewer opportunities, youth in rural areas and other marginalized groups.

This guide is designed for beginners who want to start their own podcast focusing on environmental and sustainability topics — from local ecological challenges to global climate issues. Beyond sharing knowledge, the purpose of this guide is to encourage and promote podcasting as a form of environmental communication and sustainable action. It aims to inform, inspire, and support you on your journey to creating your own podcast — one that gives voice to the planet and those who care for it.

The development of the Local Transformation Toolkit (LTT) was born within the Transition Movement, which has spread throughout the world since 2005. Community-led sustainability groups have been working for a low-carbon, socially just future with resilient communities, more active participation in society, and a caring culture focused on supporting each other. We have conducted two rounds of field trials in real communities across various contexts around the world to test and develop this approach until we deemed it sufficiently robust and secure.

This toolkit synthesises knowledge on collaborative governance for just sustainability transitions from a variety of sources, primarily: insights gathered at the training on Empowering Local Governance for Just Sustainable Transition (30 September – 03 October 2024) through the Communities for Local Green Deals project, as well as a selection of resources from ICLEI Europe’s Justice, Equity and Democracy team.

The research is based on in-depth fieldwork trips to three European ecovillages, resulting in 16 semi-structured interviews with ecovillage members and members of the European ecovillage net- work. Our findings indicate that while projects enable certain embedding processes, they also introduce tensions that could limit the long-term sustainability of these initiatives. This study underscores the need for a balanced approach to projectification, ensuring that it supports rather than undermines grassroots innovation’s objectives.

Supporting grassroots initiatives is a powerful policy tool driving social innovation and contributing to transitions. However, these initiatives often face institutional barriers that need to be addressed. Grassroots efforts highly depend on local context conditions and place-specificity, which are crucial for their success.

By fostering citizen participation and understanding multi-scalar interdependencies, policymakers can enhance the impact of these initiatives and create more favorable conditions for transformative change. Learning from grassroots efforts allows for the development of policies that are responsive to the unique needs and dynamics of different communities, ultimately facilitating more effective and sustainable innovation. In this report, 24 different grassroots initiatives covering the breadth of the EU Green Deal ambitions are compared in terms of how they scale and how these scaling processes are informed by specific local geographic conditions across diverse territorial contexts.

This article explores the communicative process by which transnational networks of energy communities (ECs) in Europe build counterpower vis-a-vis the European Union (EU) institutional framework, with the purpose of effectively contributing to the shaping and management of the EU policy and regulatory framework for renewable energy transition.
