Reclaiming Local Food Economies – Community Wealth, Territorial Resilience, and the Future of Food in Europe
The workshop “Reclaiming Local Food Economies – Community Wealth, Territorial Resilience, and the Future of Food in Europe” brings together community-led initiatives and alternative food system perspectives to explore how communities are shaping just and sustainable food futures in Europe. This is the third event of the advocacy campaign Communities for Future: Good Food for All, grounded in ECOLISE’s policy positioning paper Reclaiming the Future of Food: Community Pathways to Resilience, Justice and Regeneration.
Europe’s economies and food systems are at a crossroads given the current crises and geopolitical context, while at the same time thousands of community-led initiatives (CLIs) are already pioneering sustainable transformation. Practices rooted in local contexts and community agency, from community-supported agriculture and food cooperatives to ecovillages, food councils and permaculture projects, show that sustainable, democratic food systems are already taking shape from the ground up. Local and regional food economies not only regenerate soil and biodiversity but also drive circular, place-based development which creates community wealth, while strengthening local livelihoods, resilience and wellbeing.Â
By connecting lived community-led practices with alliance building and policy advocacy, this workshop invites participants to reflect on what kind of Europe we want, and how localised and sustainable food systems, together with transformation of the institutional frameworks, can become central pillars of a more just and sustainable future.
